Simple DIY Thanksgiving Photo Card Idea

Do you have family members that live far away that won’t be able to join you for the holidays? Here’s a thoughtful idea that won’t take you long at all and is easy on the wallet. This simple photo card idea uses your child’s holiday art work to make a keepsake for a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or other family member that you don’t get to see enough of.

Turn a Child's Art Project into a Thoughtful Photo Card for Far Away Family Members

For this Thanksgiving Photo Card I had my 4 year old son make a hand print in brown paint.  Then, after the paint dried {about 20 minutes} he went back and added “feathers” with his finger tips and thumb prints in red, yellow, and orange ink that we had in our craft cabinet {but you could also use paint}.  We added an eye and beak for the turkey using a black pen.

Child's Art Turned into a Photo Card

So, for this project all you need is a couple colors of washable paints {available at Walmart} and/or some colored ink. Oh yeah, and a sheet of paper! {Is that simple enough for us worn out mamas?}

Then, after the kids were tucked soundly in bed I scanned his picture into the computer using my printer/scanner that is old as dirt.  Then, I added text to the photo using PicMonkey - a free and simple online photo editing service that I use to edited all my photos here on WholesomeMommy.com :)

Once the photo was edited I uploaded it to the photo department on Walmart.com and choose the “Full Photo” Card option. These photo cards are available for pick up in ONE HOUR! That is fantastic for us mamas that fly by the seat of our pants.  I’m just sayin’.

What’s almost as exciting is the fact that this photo card is just 48 cents to print. So for around 4 bucks {including the tax} I was able to print a copy for each grandparent and great grandparent and one for me to keep {a total of 6}.  They also came with white envelopes for mailing which makes it simple enough that even I can manage to get it done and get them in mail BEFORE the holiday is over. {I am notoriously late on things of this nature…just ask ANY of my family members!}.

This crafty idea is great for Thanksgiving but it would also be fun to do for other holidays – and you can print as few or as many as want!  OR, another idea is using them for place cards! You can print each one with a different name on it if you wanted! The possibilities are endless.

What do you think? I think this is a home run – $4 bucks plus postage for a keepsake/thoughtful gift for family members…that’s not half bad!
