Homemade BBQ Sauce

Have you checked the labels on the condiments in your fridge yet?  I know as I have been trying {over the past 4 years} to make over my family’s eating habits, the condiments were the last thing I thought to check.  I honestly just didn’t give them much thought.

With the exception of ketchup {which I buy organic – here’s the reason why} I was buying all the same condiments I always had…until recently.  I began to explore the idea of making my own salad dressings.  It really isn’t hard to whip up a batch of salad dressing.  I can make something different every time and now I don’t have 4 half empty bottles in my fridge door!  Next, I replaced my soy sauce with a trusted, fermented brand.  And finally, I checked the label on my bbq sauce and found {cue dramatic music} HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP.

We tried a few new brands that had simple, readable ingredients.  We tried a lot of BAD BBQ sauce.  We tried a few good ones.  And, finally, my mom and dad decided to dive in and try making their own {now you know where I get my knack for experimenting in the kitchen!}.   We discovered that we could make our own, really good BBQ sauce with ingredients we had on hand that had just the right amount of sweet and a good kick of spice.  Here’s the recipe we came up with:
