Spring is Here!

outdoor 5

Are you soaking up spring right now and getting ready for summer in your neck of the woods?  We’ve had nearly perfect weather for a couple of weeks now and we’ve managed to tackle a handful of outdoor chores already this year.
outdoor 4

First up, I planted some strawberry plants and blueberry bushes in the back and front yards. We’ve been watering and taking care of them.  Judah is so excited.  When I came home from work last week he greeted me with a loud and happy announcement that our strawberry plants had baby strawberries on them!

outdoor 1

This weekend I cleaned up our patio furniture (going on 3 summers now).  We purchased this furniture at Walmart about 3 year ago and it is still looking good!  We bought the planters and umbrella last year and I am amazed at how well the umbrella has stood up to the weather!

outdoor 3

I picked up a couple of new throw pillows while I was at my local Walmart because the old ones were a little worse for wear.  Judah loves them {and I do too – love the pop of color} and wants to buy more so every chair will have one! {He makes me giggle}.  I also picked up two new hoses and a nice hose reel to keep it all neat and tidy.

outdoor 2

I haven’t purchased any flowers yet.  I have been waiting a bit longer just to ensure the frost is gone.  I have a lot of pansy flowers that overwintered and look great in the backyard.  I just need a few pretty flowers for the front porch.  I’m always a sucker for Gerber Daisies.  They are my absolute favorites. Walmart always has them very reasonably priced.  That is the next thing on my to do list, along with picking up some tomato plants for my little garden.

Whats on your outdoor to do list?  Have you been busy snagging every warm and dry minute outside?

Upcycle: Change an Old Entertainment System into a Play Kitchen

play kitchen 1

My fantastic husband has been hard at work converting an old entertainment system into a play kitchen for our littles.  This old piece of furniture began its life as an entertainment system for my parents for many years.  Now, TVs are a lot different and so this entertainment system is out of date and no longer useful.

My mom and dad have been busy cleaning out their basement and getting rid of old junk that is just in the way.  I asked them if I could keep this piece.  I had seen some cute play kitchens made out of all kinds of old furniture and this piece looked like it had all the right components!

First, we pulled out the bottom two drawers.   DJ put a back on it, took the glass out of the doors, took off all the hardware, and sanded the whole thing so that it could be painted.

The next thing we had to do is collect the materials we needed.   Lucky for my wallet, we salvaged a lot of materials we already had – an old faucet, a stainless bowl, and some plywood scraps.  All we had to purchase were handles for the cabinet and pretend oven, a couple of knobs for the small cabinets, and a sheet of MDF wood.

When we got home, he put a piece of plywood where the glass was in the big cabinet door.  Then, he put a piece of wood in the bottom where the drawers had been.  He hinged a piece of wood {MDF} on the front of where the drawers were to make an oven door.

play kitchen 2

Next comes the fun part…PAINT.  This is where this old piece of junk is going to get its personality and really come to life.  We were lucky enough to review some paint by Disney now available at Walmart.  Disney paint features more than 100 unique wall paint colors (with Disney inspired names such as “Ariel’s Tail”), specialty top coats that you apply to a painted wall such as “Speck-tacular”, which has glitter in it, Metallic paint that is available in a variety of colors, chalkboard paint that is available in a wide variety of colors (you pick out the color you want it in), and glow in the dark paint.

We chose black {or “mouse ears”} for the main kitchen color.  Later we are going to come back with another coat and then paint the cabinet door silver {magnificent metallic- “tiara time”} to look like a refrigerator.

We should have some more time to work on it this weekend.  I can’t wait to add the sink, the stove eyes, and a cute little cafe curtain my mom made.  I’ll update you when we get some more of it completed.  Both kids LOVE playing with their pretend pots and pans and play food.  When we told Judah what we were doing he got so excited!  He’s been talking about it nonstop and stayed out in the garage all day last Sunday to “help” DJ while he was working on it. ;)

Stay Tuned for Stage 2!

Closet Overhaul

closet

I’ve been cleaning up a few trouble spots in my house lately {did you see my post on organizing my bathroom cabinets and the one on capturing my kids crafts supplies?}  My mom and I were brainstorming on what to tackle next and she told me she really had been wanting to clean up her spare bedroom closet {the catch all} and the linen closet.  They were both out of hand and the space just wasn’t being utilized the best way. {Can you say AVALANCHE!?} The bedroom closet housed grandkids toys, table cloths, decorations, cushions for patio furniture, beach towels, and clothing overflow from her own bedroom closet.

closet 2

The linen closet was in even worse shape, although it did only house linens. After much discussion one how to organize these closets we decided to turn the linen closet into a “game closet” for the grandkids – housing all the games and other playthings.   And, as for the bedroom closet, we decided it would best be used as a much larger linen closet to hold all the linens that were in the linen closet plus the beach towels, patio cushions, and table decorations.

linen

The first thing we did was meet at Walmart to pick up the items we needed to organize this mess!  We bought three shelving units  {they cost around $20 each} and several Rubbermaid tubs for under $100.  Judah and I had fun helping Nana put the shelves together (they were super simple!).   While we were busy putting things together Nana was deciding which items to keep and which items needed to go to another home.

linen 2

The shelving units fit perfect under the clothes rod in what used to be my brother’s old bedroom closet.  These made for almost custom – but much more affordable closet organization system.  Nana stacked beach towels and pool things on the first shelving unit, table linens (table cloths, runners, etc) and picnic supplies on the second shelving unit, and bed linens on the third shelving unit {separated by size – double, queen, king). On the top shelf of the closet (the existing shelf) holds the plastic tubs with seasonal decorations.  My mom and I have amassed lots of pretty things for decorating in the fall.  These tubs are perfect up high since they only need to be accessed once a year.  She also left her patio cushions on the top shelf.

linen 4

The linen closet, turned game closet is perfect!  The kids know exactly where their toys are AND where they need to go when they are finished with them.  The games are a little high up for my two tots but that’s a god thing!  They can’t drag out all the games and jumble the pieces.  They have to ask one of us for help once they’ve selected a game.  The closet could use one more shelf on the bottom but my dad can fix that pretty easily.  linen5

All the loose toys are in the bottom of the closet in a wagon that can be easily pulled out.  Even my smallest one can get to her toys.   The other crate in the bottom is filled with books and dress up items – making them easier to get to too.

My mom was very pleased with how the two closets turned out and that she was able to get everything she needed to organize both closets for under $100 at Walmart.  I’ve got one more organizing project to share with you in the coming week.  I redid my pantry and I am soo happy with the results.  Stay tuned!

Organizing Kids Craft Supplies – No Longer Out of Control!

closet

My kids and I have amassed a large collection of art supplies.  Obviously, from the picture above you can see that our organizational system (ie: a basket and a box) was not working so well.  The craft supplies were taking over my laundry room, I was tripping over them, and my 1 year old thinks it is her duty to take a few items and litter the house with them each time someone leaves the laundry room door open.

closet 2

I bought this cabinet from Walmart.com and chose “Pick it up Today.”  For just $29.47 I had a cheap solution that solved my problem!  The first thing I did was sort the craft supplies to try to figure out how to organize them in the new cabinet.

closet 4

I remembered I had a bunch of empty diaper wipe boxes that would work great for corralling items in the cabinet.  I went and found my stash and I was right!  They fit perfectly!  {Hey that’s green – reusing items – and FREE!  The best kind.}  I found a couple of other containers I had lying around for holding other supplies, like a big cup from a show at Phillips Arena for markers, a take-out container for paint brushes, and a coffee container for glue sticks.

closet 3

Every item now has a home in the cabinet and it is infinitely easier to locate the items we need for projects.  Everytime I go in laundry room and I see my tidy little cabinet I smile.  I love being organized. {I’m weird like that!}.

closet 5

To finish off the project I added some labels to the containers.  They make it much easier to remember where I put little bits of this and that.  I found my labels online but I can’t find the link for the life of me.  however, I found two very similar ones here and here.  You can see other printable labels I’ve found on my pinterest board here.

What do you think?  I think I have regained a little bit of my sanity. ;)

Winter Solutions for Dry Heat

winter 4

To a lot of folks winter time means extra expense.  With cranking our heat up, losing that heat out drafty windows or doors, and problems that come with snow and/or ice, its easy to see where those hard earned dollars disappear to.

With that said, “winterizing” your home usually means installing a programmable thermostat, updating old windows, covering old windows, adding thermal curtains, and turning your thermostat down to as cool as you can bear it.

But, there are other things you can do that cost very little or nothing at all!  Here are a few tips to get you thinking outside the box:

  1. Baking?  Winter time is a great time to crank up the oven and bake something!  You’ll get something warm to fill your belly and the heat from the oven will also warm the house.  To get the biggest bang for your buck crack the door on your oven to let the heat escape when you are done baking.
  2. Add an extra layer to your bed (and your kids’ beds).  You’ll be able to bump the thermostat down a notch and no one will be the wiser – they’ll be snug and warm in their beds.
  3. Add weather stripping around doors and windows.
  4. Open curtains to let the warm sun in during the day but don’t forget to close them when the sun goes down!  Keeping curtains closed at night keep out the draft.

But, there’s another problem that comes with turning on the heat – besides the cost.  Not only is winter rough on our wallets – its rough on our bodies!  All that dry heat can be a killer to our sinuses and throats.  I know I noticed a big difference in my kids and their sleeping habits once winter came around.  Judah has a had a terrible dry cough.

winter

To combat the dry heat we bought humidifiers for their rooms.  Judah’s grammy bought this cute elephant one for him.  So, we decided to get Eliana a similar one for her room – that would match her room’s decor, of course!

winter 2

I found this cute owl at Walmart.com for just $39.98. It’s a 1 gallon ultrasonic cool mist humidifier from Crane and it comes in a number of other cute animal designs.  If you have older children you’ll be glad to know there are more “adult” designs available too and at even more affordable prices than this one.

I’ve been really happy with our Crane humidifiers.  They hold enough water to last all night and they are easy to fill up.

winter 3 I’ve got just one more tip for you: Where some warm jammies!  ;)   Here are my two cuties in their thermals courteousy of Walmart! Judah LOVES his batman thermals and Eliana is comfy and snug in these one piece thermals from Gerber.

Operation Organizing the Bathroom Cabinets

declutter
Hubby’s Bathroom Cabinet

I’ve decided to tackle a major clutter zone in my home: the bathroom cabinets.  They are a jumbled mess and it is nearly impossible to find anything I need.  It is like going into the black hole.

Declutter2

My Bathroom Cabinet & Drawers {WHOA!}

After a good inventory and a short brainstorming session I headed out to my local Walmart with a list in hand.  A good two hours was spent “in the trenches” decluttering and organizing and afterwards I emerged pooped but elated with the results.  I am going to share with you the after photos along with some comentary on what I did.

declutter3

Walmart asked me to declutter a problem space in my home for $50.  I got pretty darn close.  I ended up spending $52.73 for all the items I bought, pictured here.  I got several sizes of Sterilite latch boxes for a total of ten boxes.  I also got a lazy susan and 3 of these glass jars. Not bad!  That averages to under $4 an item.

To start this project off, I drug everything out from under the cabinets and started sorting the items into common groups. Then, I tackled the medicine basket.  Until now, all of our medicines were just piled and jumbled into a very tall basket.  It was difficult to know what we had, much less find what we needed.  So, I decided to separate them into smaller groups of like items: First aid kit, children’s medicines, tummy trouble aids, vitamins, and cold and allergy medicines.

declutter6

After I filled all my new bins, I printed, cut, and attached these cute labels to everything.  You can get the labels I printed here at World Label.  Or, if you prefer, I have lots of other cool printable labels on my pinterest board here you can choose some of your very own!

Declutter9

I think the end result turned out nice – an much more “user friendly.”  This is the photo of my husband’s bathroom cabinet after the makeover.

Declutter7

The medicine buckets are MUCH more useful this way.  I can find band aids when I need them, my husband will know just where to look for antacid, and we won’t have to dig for days to find a tube of Neosporin!  I can’t say enough how excited I am about this part of the organization!

declutter5

Here are the photos of my bathroom cabinet after.  Now there is a place for everything – one basket for bath items (shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, and body wash), a basket for lotions & powders, a basket for travel sized items, one for face cleaners and lotions, one for make-up (these are extras and not ones I’m currently using – they are in my make-up bag), and finally one for femine products. I ended up using the jars for razors and cotton balls.

declutter10

Of course, every good declutter project means a good purging is in order… I ended up throwing out 5 bags of garbage.  Most where expired medicines and expired products. It felt good to get rid of junk, and get our cabinets organized.  Now I’ll know exactly what I already have so that I am not purchasing more of something when I already have something in the cabinet I could use.

I realized I didn’t take after photos of the drawers  – well, you’ll be glad to know after cleaning they are EMPTY!  I was literally beside myself and had no idea what I was going to do with these empty drawers.  Finally, I came to the conclusion that i could actually keep the items I use daily in them – like my hairbrush and make up bag – rather then leave them out on the counter.  What a novel idea, right!? ;)

School is in Session: Pictures of my Classroom

I have been back in my second grade classroom for two weeks now and I have let you in on a few of the things I have been up to, like making these cool crate seats for the classroom.  But, I thought you might like to see the final photos of the finished classroom.  These photos were taken one morning during the first week so you’ll see some of the work hanging around the room. ;)

One of the things the students are always excited to see is the couch.  It is really an old love seat that my grandmother had in her office that she didn’t need anymore.  My crafty mother was able to recover it with some denim that my grandfather had gotten YEARS ago from the mill where he worked (reusing old resources! yay!).  The denim is great for this couch since it has been battered for many years in my classroom by LOTS of children.  It has held up well.  We added some cute throw pillows to it to match the lime green and aqua color scheme, and viola!  The couch still fits with the new decor.

Speaking of color scheme and my crafty mother… as you can see in the photos Angie (the teacher I job share with) and I went with lime green, aqua, orange, and cherry red.  These colors are calming and fun and I love how they make the room feel.  My mom helped up to make a curtain with some of the same fabric we bought for the crate seats.  I also ordered paper lanterns and tissue balls to hang from the ceiling.  We used ribbon to hang the lanterns.  There are 8 orange ones, 4 green polka dot ones, and 5 aqua ones we used to hang table numbers from.

The blue rug in the reading center is one of my favorite elements.  It is nubby and soft and actually, it is two rugs from Target safety pinned together!  I also found lots of blue and green baskets and buckets at the Dollar Tree that we used to put books in.  I divided them by genre and used this template to print the names of the genres on post it notes to make labels for the buckets/bins.  We covered the post-it notes with contact paper so they would stay.

Angie also found caddies at the Dollar Tree for the tables.  These hold the student’s supplies: crayons, pencils, glue, and scissors. I printed faux chalk board table number tags here.  Then, I hole punched the table number tags and hung them with rings and tied ribbon around them to make them cute. ;)

We bought a couple of crates to house the students on going projects.  I also bought these orange boxes from Oriental Trading and adhered these “sharpened,” and “unsharpened”  faux chalkboard tags to them.  I also bought these cute lamps from Dollar General.  They were originally white with white lamp shades (boring).  So, my husband helped me spray paint them (there are 3) along with a floor lamp I bought at Walmart this pretty aqua color to match the rest of the decor.  Then, I hot glued the green polka dot ribbon around the bottom of the lamp shades.

We also covered a couple bulletin boards with fabric and matching border. We ran boarder around the white board too.   And Angie made a super cute way to display our math and reading tasks. She put the levels inside cute picture frames (exceeds 3, meets 2, and working towards 1) and hung them from ribbon.  I sprayed some clothes pins with some of the aqua spray paint and hot glued them to the board too so that the students could hang their work in the appropriate places.

I think the room turned out really cute and the kids seem to love it too.  It helps to have a space you feel cozy in – especially since we’ll be spending a lot of time here! :)

Kid’s Bathroom Remodel

I promised to show you to kid’s bathroom remodel and I’ve finally gotten around to getting all the photos uploaded!  The first photos are the “BEFORE.”  It wasn’t too bad.  It just didn’t have a theme and it was really drab.  All the mismatched hand me downs found there way into this bathroom. It lacked personality and I waned the kids to have a fun, kid friendly bathroom that would be all their own.

I am so excited about how the finished product turned out.  I knew I wanted to do it in a ducky theme but I had a little trouble finding things I actually liked.  I ordered several items online and my mom lucked up on a few things.  (The list of items and where I bought them are at the bottom of the post if you are curious).  I absolutely LOVE the colors.  I think it made the room look really cheerful.

One of the things I am really proud of is the photo hanging behind the sinks.  Framed artwork costs an arm and a leg and after searching around locally and finding nothing I turned my search to online options.  Again, I came up empty handed since I only found a few ducky items and nothing was what I had in mind (besides the fact that they cost more than the rest of the remodel put together!).  So, I decided to think outside the box.  I took a photo of the cutest little rubber duck my kids already owned on top of one of the cute orange sherbet polka dotted towels that I had ordered.  I choose the best photo and had it turned into a canvas at Walmart.com.  I knew the colors would match this way and it totally goes with the theme!

Another thing I am really proud of is the step stool.  It was an unfinished one that was given to me by my sister in law.  I gave it a coat of white paint (left over from painting the house).  Then, I used my Cricut machine to cut the words “Splish” and “Splash” out of blue shiny vinyl.  I just love how it turned out!

To fancy up the shower curtain a bit (and bring in the orange color) I added orange polka doted ribbons to the top around each of the curtain rings.

And last, I absolutely fell in love with these duck towels.  The duck and water design were how I purchased them from Macy’s.  One of my coworkers has a monogram machine and she was able to match up the blue thread from the water to monogram Judah’s name and Eliana’s name each on their very own towel.  My husband and I hung a new towel bar and two coat hooks under the art work I made.  I thought the coat hooks would be easy for the kids to use as they are learning to clean up after themselves (we hung them very low for this purpose).

What do you think?  Isn’t it cute?  What’s missing?

Home Improvement – Bathroom Redo- Step #1

Walmart has a new website all about helping you make basic home improvement (DIY) projects simple, called Projects Made Simple.  They are providing step by step how-to videos (around 75 to 100 of them!) like painting an accent wall, installing a towel bar, and repairing a running toilet.  Accompanying each video is a product list and downloadable project guides.

I decided to try out hanging a towel bar. I actually got so inspired after thinking about which project to do that I totally redid the kids entire bathroom!  It’s something I’ve been wanting to do and this just pushed me to get the ball rolling.  Does that happen to you?  Hahaha, you do one thing and then it snowballs into ten more home improvement projects?  Please tell me I’m not the only one this happens to!

So, I watched the video on how to hang a towel bar.  You can see the video here:

After watching the video and printing the project sheet, I headed out to Walmart to pick up the supplies I needed.  I actually decided to pick up a towel bar and two coat hooks that matched the towel bar.  My thought was that I would hang the towel bar kind of low (so the kids could use it and it would be the right height) and the hooks would be perfect for the kids to hang their own towels (and easier for my littles).

One things I did differently was that first, I marked off where the studs in the wall were so I could decided if I could hang the towel bar on studs or if I would need to use the anchors.  It just happened to work out that where I wanted the towel bar and hooks there were studs.  Other than that, I followed the video exactly. Easy Peasy!

I just have a few finishing touches and the whole bathroom will be complete!  Stay tuned, I’ll be sharing the full makeover this week!

Home Improvement – The Baby’s Room: Step 3

My mom has worked so hard getting all the baby bedding finished for Eliana’s room.  It is beautiful!

Mom and I went to the typical baby stores to look for bedding and couldn’t find anything that I liked so we talked about making something.  So, after visiting several fabric stores I went back to the first store we visited and bought the one I was really in love with.  It is a little different – not the typical baby fabrics.  But, I think it turned out just right!

First, mom made the valance for the huge window.  It was an experiment, mom used a pattern that didn’t really fit and thanks to her ingenuity she made it work with a little change here and a little change there.  Then, she made the curtains so we can close out the sun (this room gets the most sun in the house!).

Then, Mom made the crib sheet, the bumper pad, the changing pad cover, and the bed skirt.  I think they turned out fabulous!  She cut the pillows out (the two smaller ones and the floor pillow) and I took them to a friend of mine to monogram along with the bumper pad (before she sewed it together).  She monogrammed the two smaller pillows and she put her name on the floor pillow and bumper pad.  Then mom stuffed them and sewed them up.  We bought the bed at a really good price on Walmart.com.  The bed is classic and simple so the bedding really pops and is the star of the show.

The last piece to complete was the coverlet.  Mom quilted the birds.

I did manage to do a little bit of work in the room. (:  I painted the mural once the furniture was placed.  I wanted to kind of mimic the birds that were on the fabrics.  I used Glidden’s paint and primer in lavender and brown.  I used some white craft paint to outline the birds.  I think it turned out pretty good for an amateur.

So now the room is complete, and just in time!  Only 2 (or less) weeks to go! (:
