Spring Sports Begin at the Sawyer House

teeball

Its definitely spring at our house!  We’ve been busy getting the yard ready and Judah has started his first year of Tee-Ball.  In our little town it is called “Tot-ball” for 3 and 4 year olds.  We decided to wait until he turned 4 to sign him up.  He technically could have played last year but he wasn’t really interested then and I’m glad we waited.  He ASKED to play “baseball” like his cousins.  He was SOOO excited when we told him we were going to sign him up.

Of course, we waited about a month from the time we signed him up until the actual first practice.  That was a LONG wait for a four year old.  He asked every couple days if it was time to go play a baseball game.

Last week was his actual first practice and he had a blast!  The coaches were so good with them and we were surprised at how well Judah could take instruction {another reason why I’m glad we waited another year}.

But, with adding an extra curricular to our busy schedule we’ve had to get organized.  A little extra planning on my part and we’ve still managed to have meals at home and get to practice on time.  It takes team work though, I plan a meal that can work up quick.  Sometimes I start parts of it the morning or night before.  DJ helps me get Judah dressed and we all run around like crazy packing up last minute items and loading the dishes in the dishwasher.  But it works!

After our first practice we realized we needed to get Judah a glove and a bat.  We went straight to our local Walmart in town and were able to get what we needed for a very reasonable price.  Judah picked out a baseball bat that has a shark on it – he thought that was really cool. {I thought it was really cool that it only cost me about $17}.

teeball 4

We also picked out a mitt that would fit his hand.  Again, I was giddy with the $7 price tag that was on the shelf!  so for around $25 he had all the gear he needed.  Last spring we purchased an inexpensive tee and some balls to play around with at home from Walmart.  Now all we have to purchase is his team’s uniform.  We haven’t heard the final price but it sounds like we can expect about $40 for his shirt, baseball pants, and a visor.  So, all in all we’ll be about $65 into this sport. Not too bad for a season of fun.

And fun it is.  At the end of the first practice, Judah wrapped his arms around his daddy’s legs and said, “Thank you daddy for bringing me to baseball.  I had a GREAT time.”  I think DJ almost melted. :)

Field Trip to Fernbank Museum

Dinos5

The week before last my family visited Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.  I’ve been planning to take Judah for several months and we finally made the voyage. {It takes a lot to motivate this lady to drive in Atlanta traffic! Lol}.  I knew he’d be in love as soon as he laid eyes on the place.  Judah is our aspiring paleontologist {much like many a four year old}.

Dinos3

All of the exhibits were wonderful.  So much to learn and see.  But, of course Judah’s favorite parts were the dinosaur exhibits.  Lucky for us, there was two giant skeletons in the middle of the museum as well as several replicas like this one in the dinosaur room and outside the cafeteria like the one in the first photo.  There were also other great exhibits, like the Wold of Shells and the Walk through Time in Georgia.

Dinos4

We took our time and enjoyed the museum all afternoon.  Our last stop was was Fernbank Naturequest, a spot just for curious kids.  My kids didn’t want to leave!  There were so many things to do and see…and TOUCH!  They loved climbing the tree house, uncovering dinosaur fossils, putting together sea life puzzles, jumping in virtual streams, and finding hidden wildlife.  I’m glad we saved this exhibit for last or else we wouldn’t have made it to any other part of the museum!

Dinos2

After a long day at the museum we decided to have a little snack {which I brought along in our cooler} before heading home.  We had some Stonyfield YoKid Smoothies {Judah loves the Very Berry ones}.  They have organic fruit and veggie purees in them and they are the perfect size for little hands.  Stonyfield also has some larger smoothies that my friends rave about but I know when I’ve given them to my kids in the past they were unable to finish the whole bottle.  They have no problem downing every last drop of these! :)

They were great to bring along to keep little bellies from growling and big voices yelling that they wanted to stop for {unhealthy} fast food.  This had the ability to tide us over until we could get home and I could make us a quick dinner.

dinos1

Fernbank has three really cool dinosaur statues right outside the front doors.  The fountains were relaxing and we just kicked back for a few minutes before loading into our car for the long drive home.  Of course, both littles were asleep before we hit the interstate. :)

YoKidssMOOthie-LowFat-VeryBerry-3p1oz6pk_350x270As soon as we were home Judah said he wanted to visit ANOTHER dinosaur museum.

Where do you like to take your kids on excursions?

I received product for review and other compensation in exchange for this post.  Of course, my family lives off of yogurt and Stonyfield happens to be one of the brands I love and trust…so this is an easy and honest review of a lovely product.

Making Memories with the Family at the Circus!

circus 3

We had a fabulous time at Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus in Atlanta at the Philip’s Arena last Wednesday night.  We saw the new “Dragons!” show and I have to say it is by far my favorite circus! We’ve been to the circus the past 4 years and I think this show was the best we’ve ever seen!  The music was great and the acts were even better.

Judah said the lions and tigers were his favorite.  My favorite was the little dogs and cats that did tricks.  They were sooo cute {and talented!}.   Judah also loved the dragons.  The dragon floats that they paraded in and out were incredible.

circus 2

Eliana enjoyed this circus too.  She was a great age to really understand what was going on and she was mesmerized!  I’ve never seen her so excited!  She jumped up and down and pointed and hollered for the first 20 minutes of the circus non-stop!  She was totally entranced by the parade at the beginning.   But of course the snacks ran a close second!  She ate her weight in popcorn and cotton candy. LOL.

circus 1

Besides the show being absolutely mind blowing, we were thrilled with the visit we got from the clown during the intermission.  I loved that I was able to get a shot of Judah with him, even though Judah was a little nervous!

‘Tis the season for travel.  The fact is, most of us who work outside the home will get a few days off in the coming months – starting tomorrow!  And, many of us will take some of those days to visit with family and friends that we might not get the opportunity to see as much as we would like.

My husband’s family lives about 7 hours away from us and that means we don’t get to see them nearly as much as we would like.  But, we take every opportunity we can to make a road trip for a visit.  That means three day weekends and any vacation time we can scrape together is usually spent traveling in our car with our two littles to visit Grammy and Gramps.

So, with many of you traveling this week {and in the coming weeks} I thought I’d share how I keep my two littles entertained during those long drives.

1. Keep ‘em busy:
To keep Judah (who is a little more than 3 1/2 years old) entertained and busy I pack him lots of things to do.

  • I pick up packs of stickers that I find cheap at the dollar stores (and free in the mail!) and squirrel them away until we take a trip. Stickers paired with a small notebook will keep him entertained for a while!
  • Coloring books with “special crayons” (ie: ones he doesn’t use any other time) like Crayola Twistables work great!
  • Crayola color wonder paper and markers are great for the car because the markers don’t write on anything but the “magic” color wonder paper! (keep your car interior marker free!)
  • I spy games and car bingo are also great games that will kill time (see my Pinterest board for road trips for lots of great ideas and links!)
  • Judah has a hand held game called a MobiGo that we pack for road trips.  We only let him use it on road trips so that way it will be new and interesting and will keep his attention longer since it isn’t something he gets to play with on a regular basis.

2. Pack lots of snacks:

  • We pack our own cooler with snacks and drinks and keep it inside the main part of the car where it is easily accessible (not in the trunk).  Not only is packing your own snacks cheaper, you can make sure you pack some healthy alternatives and not just sugar.
  • Fruit like grapes, apple slices, and whole bananas make great snacks for the car as well as crackers with cheese or peanut butter, tubes of Organic yogurt, squeezable apple sauce, raisins and other dried fruits, and pretzels.

3. Make regular stops:
Little kids need breaks to get out and stretch their legs.

  • Keep a frisbee or ball in your car and stop at a rest stop for a quick bathroom break and a fast game of frisbee or kick ball.
  • We pack our own snacks and drinks to save money but we usually make at least one stop for gas and let the kids go in and pick out one special treat.  This gives them something to look forward to and we usually try to work it in when everyone is starting to get stir crazy! By the way, did you know Racetrack now has many healthy snack options available?  It is called the Better for you line and it includes items like Kind Bars, Yum Nuts, and Pop Chips, among many other items.
  • Stop for lunch.  If you are traveling a long period of time (like our 7 hour trips) I recommend stopping and sitting down for a real lunch instead of hitting a fast food joint and eating in the car.  Although it means you’ll arrive at your destination a little later, it is so helpful to let everyone get out, move around, and get a good meal in them (which usually means a nap will follow!).  Besides being healthier, it is also just plain easier to feed little ones inside a restaurant strapped to a high chair rather than in a car seat while trying to drive!

Where ever you are headed this season, be safe and remember that a road trip is more than just arriving at  your final destination, getting their is half the fun!

A Trip to the Strawberry Farm

Two weeks ago my mom, my two kidlets, and I went to the local strawberry farm to pick as many berries as we could before the kids pooped out.  We had a GREAT time!

The strawberry farm closest to us is in Rome, Georgia and is called LCCL Strawberry Farms.  {They are celebrating their tenth year this year!}  We’ve been going to pick strawberries here for the past two years since a friend of ours shared it with us.  The strawberries are FABULOUS – so sweet and juicy.  NOTHING like what you get from the grocery store.  Okay.  They are both red.  But other than that – NOTHING like it. (:

Judah had a wonderful time picking berries.  He ran up and down the rows looking for the ripe red berries and he did a great job of ONLY picking the red ones.  He really got into it, shouting at me when he would find a really big one.  He also did a great job of not eating any until after we were done picking and paying {which by the way, their prices are VERY reasonable – $1.60 per pound}.

I can’t say the same for Eliana, though.  We laughed upon checking out and asked if they prefer that I weigh her before paying {although I did pay them extra for the berries that she ate while we were picking them}.   She knows what strawberries are and LOVES them.  It is actually one of the first foods she would really eat.  I think it is because she can hold it and feed herself!  So independent!

So, once she figured out what we were putting in our bucket she started acting crazy…that is until I handed her one.  I was oblivious to the mess that she was making since she was strapped to the front of me, facing out, while I was sitting on the ground picking berries as fast as I could go.  Finally, as she was on around strawberry number 3 or 4 she started to get really aggravated and had had enough of being jostled about as I slid down the rows.  I took her out of the baby carrier and turned her around to face me and I died laughing at the mess she had made.  It looked like she had just smashed one of the strawberries right on the side of her head!

I picked berries a little longer as Eliana hung on to the side of my berry bucket. {Yes, I guess we can say my child learned to pull up in the strawberry patch}.  Judah asked if he could go sit in the car in the “wind” (aka: air conditioning) so we decided to hang it up.

After weighing (we had 20 pounds!) and paying for our berries we bought a bowl of strawberry ice cream and a delicious fried strawberry pie to share.  Then Judah took the train for two rides while my mom decided to pick a little longer.

All in all, we ended up bringing home 40 pounds of strawberries.  We split up and froze 20 pounds and my dad is making homemade strawberry wine out of the other 20 pounds.  In a few weeks we’re going to do it all over again.

It was a lot of fun – not too much work {hey, if I can do it with a 7 month old strapped to me it can’t be too bad!} and a great excuse to get outdoors and have some family fun.
