A Chemical Free Bath – Products that WORK and Smell GREAT!

This is NOT a sponsored post.  None of these brands have paid me to write or given me free products to review.  Think of this more like a public service announcement. :) After five years of trying chemical free or “green” shampoos, body washes, conditioners, soaps, bubble baths, etc. I’ve finally found products that I LOVE. I’ve been through a LOT of products that were lack-luster, from not sudsing up, to being super drying, to being stinky, to just down right not working!  Not only are these products better for you – they actually WORK and there are even some on the list that have chemical free scents that are LUXURIOUS! I’m super excited to share with you!

Take a Luxurious Bath without the chemicals from wholesomeMommy.com

You no longer have to choose between what works well and what is toxin free. You really can have both. For a long time I thought I had to choose. And, I always chose the healthy, green option. And, often, I was disappointed.  Disappointed with how my hair looked, disappointed in how my skin felt, and disappointed at the “experience” {sometimes a girl just wants to smell good and ENJOY the few minutes of peace {only minutes of peace} they get in the shower!  I’m so glad I kept trying different things and I’m so gad that more companies are showing up on the scene that realize BOTH health and beauty are important to a woman.

You may have found other products you love, so by all means, I BEG you to add your suggestions in the comments below.  Its tough weeding through all the options out there so I’d love to hear of your other favorites. Here are mine:

:: Shampoo & Conditioner

I’ve tried a LOT of green and toxin free shampoos and conditioners. My biggest complaint is the lack of lather.  You can definitely get clean hair without lather but I NEED lather.  The other problem is that my hair is thin and lacks body and most of these green shampoos has done nothing to help that problem and instead make it look even more lifeless.  I’ve finally found a line of shampoos & conditioners I LOVE. I love the way they feel, smell, and the way they leave my hair looking and feelings.  They are called Shea Moisture.  And the great news is, unlike many brands I’ve used, this one is widely available – at Walmart, Target, and Amazon among other stores I’m sure.

I’ve used the Yucca & Baobab Thickening Shampoo and Volumizing Conditioner which smells heavenly. It has a lovely scent and makes me feel like I’m in a tropical oasis.  I wasn’t expecting it from the name but after checking the ingredient list I found out that lovely scent is from honeysuckle flowers. They leave my hair feeling full of body and silky.  Plus it has a beautiful, toxic free scent.  I checked the score on the Environmental Working Group’s site – Skin Deep – and it is a 0 out of 10. The lower the number on the hazard scale the better {the less toxic it is}.  While Skin Deep isn’t necessarily the be all end all – it is a good place to start and I use it to make better decisions about my personal care products.

Shea Moisture also has a Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. Again, this stuff smells awesome!  It leaves my hair feeling silky smooth and super shiny. It has a very tropical scent that I love. It scores a 1 out of 10 on the hazard scale on the skin deep site.

:: Body Wash Suitable for the WHOLE family

I like body wash and I like fragrance but the trouble is, a lot of the time the fragrance in personal care products is synthetic and can cause problems.  The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate. Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.  Even if a product is called “unscented” it can still contain “fragrance” in the ingredient list. That is because they must use a fragrance to mask the smells of the other ingredients in the product to make it “unscented.”  To be sure you are getting a truly fragrance free product check the ingredient list and make sure it doesn’t list fragrance.

One body wash that has a light scent that IS NOT toxic is Everyday Shea’s Vanilla Mint body wash. It is safe enough for everyone in the family to use from babies up and it is not overly scented or “girly” so that it is fine for both me and my manly husband. :)   The best part? The scent is from essential oils – so no harmful/synthetic fragrances.  Oh, and it comes in a HUGE bottle and is one of the most affordable non-toxic body washes I’ve come across – not a bad perk either. :)

A sister product Everyday Coconut Super-Hydrating Body Wash, is another of our favorites. Again, in a huge bottle, affordable, and toxin free.

:: Bar Soap

Shea Moisture also has a a matching bar soap to their Coconut and Hibiscus shampoo/conditioner.  The Coconut and Hibiscus Shea Butter Soap is super hydrating unlike many bar soaps.  Might be a bit too girly for the fellas though. :)   Scores a 0 out of 10 on the Skin Deep hazard scale!

:: Shampoo and Conditioner for the Kiddos

Any of the shampoos and conditioners above are also fine for young kiddos – they are non-toxic after all!  However, if you are looking for a “children’s product,” here are a few that I really love:

Shea Moisture Carrot and Mango Extra Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner is a wonderful smelling toxin free shampoo and condition best for dry and/or curly hair. A little goes a long way.

California Baby has a calming shampoo and body wash that works lovely and has a calming lavender scent from essential oils.  My only con to this product is that it can be pretty pricey. It scores a 1 out of 10 on the Skin Deep hazard scale.

California Baby also has a great product called Therapeutic Relief, Eczema Shampoo and Body Wash. This product is fragrance free and could be a great solution for a little one with very sensitive skin. It scores a 1 out of 10 on the Skin Deep hazard scale.

:: Body Wash for Children

Again, the body washes listed above are safe for the whole family but I have a few that I really love to use on my kiddos {and I’ve been known to sneak a bit here and there – especially when going out of town and I only want to carry one small bottle for all of us!}.

My number one pick is Shea Moisture Raw Shea Chamomile and Argan Oil Baby Head to Toe Body Wash and Shampoo has that same lovely, toxin free scent that is synonymous with Shea Moisture products. My kids love the way it smells and so do I! I also love that it leaves their skin soft and moisturized thanks to the shea butter.  I also love that this wash has two essential oils in it known to be good for the skin: frankincense and myrrh.  This product score a 1 out of 10 on the Skin Deep hazard scale.

Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash is another product I’ve used on and off.  The pro is that it is available almost everywhere and compared to other non-toxic products, this one is more affordable.  However, it does contain one iffy ingredient: linalool – it is an ingredient added for fragrance and scores a 5 on the hazard scale. Linalool is banned by Europe because it is a possible toxin. Overall this product scores a 2 out of 10 on the Skin Deep hazard scale.

:: Bubble Bath

Bubble bath isn’t a product that we use all the time but when we do my standards are the same. I want a non-toxic product free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petrochemicals, and toxic fragrances.

Here are a few we love:

Every day Shea has a lemon and lavender bubble bath that makes TONS of chemical free bubbles. It has a light calming scent perfect for bath before bed time.

California Baby Calendula Bubble Bath is another good one – lot of bubbles and has the added benefit of being excellent for the skin. Calendula is known to be calming and good for the skin – especially skin irritations.  This product scores a  1 out of 10 on the Skin Deep hazard scale.

    Have you found a good/safe body lotion? My daughter loves to use lotion and I need one that is all natural or very close.

    • Denisesawyer says:

      Most of the brands I mentioned here {Shea Moisture, Everyday Shea, and California Baby} all have body lotions that are also safe. :)

  2. Have you tried Ava? They are 100%nontoxic and work great too! I became a consultant because I love them. :D .

    I love the Everyday Shea products for my family. I’ve found the Bubble Bath on sale at Whole Foods for $6, and the bottle lasts me at least 4 months (we only use one capful for bath, and it’s plenty of suds for my peanut.)

    This is very helpful – thank you. I have wasted a lot of money and even thrown some products out that I have tried. I am still trying to get a good clean non-toxic deodorant that will hold up to my running- I have one brand that is great for every day but not so good for intense exercise such as running or heavy cross-training. Have you had any luck? I don’t care if the product still lets me sweat – I just don’t want the order. :-)

    • Denisesawyer says:

      Yes, I have been trying a new one for the past month or so – trying to find one that will live up to the Georgia heat, gardening, playing outside with the kiddos, etc. I LOVE this one! It hasn’t failed me yet. I am actually getting ready to do a review but since you asked I’ll go ahead and share it with you. ;)
      It is called Schmidt’s – you can order it on Amazon. It lasts a while. Like I said, I’ve been using it about a month, and I haven’t quite used half of it. So it will likely last 2 to 3 months easily. Here’s the link to my favorite one they make {Bergamont Lime} http://amzn.to/1kX3ha0
      But, they also have 3 other scents {from essential oils only} and a fragrance free one.
